I was born in 1978 in Beijing China. My family and I immigrated to Canada in 1988. As a child, life was demanding and solitary. My parents had high expectations for us. My brother and I had a regimented upbringing, our schedules consisted of school, violin lessons and art lessons without any space left to dream/wander/run with other children. I remember many moments sitting at my desk with math equations in front of me, desperate to be free. I believe, to deal with this isolation, I began to play and wander freely in my mind, where there weren’t any rules and an adventure could last for hours. One of the activities I was allowed to do was draw, I remember my brother and I would draw massive adventures of aerial warfare, fantastic robot worlds, gallant giants and beautiful fairies. I think when we drew these epic tales, we both felt free and unencumbered by the many obligations of our young lives. Now, when I paint, I am still re-creating those fantastic worlds I used to as a child. I think in these spaces, I am always free and never feel confined, the possibilities are boundless and there are so many adventures to be had.
I have a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and a degree in 3D Animation and Visual Effects from Vancouver Film School. I live and paint in Squamish, BC.
